The Carrick-on-Shannon branch of the Leitrim Icebreakers had a very successful swim on Christmas Day with over 25 swimmers taking the plunge. Together with their counterparts, the Ballinamore Icebreakers, they have raised in excess of E5,500 with some money and cards still to be returned.

Three charities in all benefit from the generosity of the swimmers and sponsors: The National Council for the Blind, the Irish Guide Dogs Association and Leitrim Talking Newspaper.

This money helps to fund the services offered by the three charities to the 185 visually impaired people in Co. Leitrim. Help is also given to people requiring assistance dogs.

Anyone wishing to receive the Talking Newspaper should contact Edel O’Connell who can be contacted on 071-96-40847.

Grateful thanks are due to the Civil Defence team who give their team so generously every year and to Pearl Lowe and Jim Gorman whose help is invaluable every year and last but not least the dedicated and generous swimmers who tog out year after year no matter what the weather is like.

Special mention has to be given to Mary O’Boyle who despite having had a very significant birthday this year continues to do trojan work collecting sponsorship year after year.

What an inspiration she is to each and every one of us and she is there every Christmas morning helping the hot drinks together with Jim Gorman. Keep up the good work.

Anyone with sponsorship cards please return them to Mary O’Boyle or Paddy O’Connor (Ballinamore).
