People are dying as a result of lack of ambulances in the region

Increased ambulance services needs in western region

Cllr Brendan Barry noted that in the first five months of 2023 the longest wait in the country was 3 hours and 16 minutes for a life threatening call and that was in Leitrim. 

Speaking at the monthly meeting of Leitrim County Council, he continued that under HSE targets, an ambulance should arrive at the scene of a life-threatening heart or respiratory arrest within 19 minutes in 75 per cent of instances and said this was not achieved in nine months of 2023 in the western region. 

"There aren't enough ambulances in this region and people are waiting too long and as a result, dying," he told the council meeting in Kinlough.

He asked if the council could again write to the HSE regarding the issue with this suggestion which was seconded by Cllr Padraig Fallon.
