Home Help staff are "going way beyond the call of duty", says Cllr Mary Bohan
Cllr Mary Bohan proposed that the council call on the HSE to immediately increase Home Help hours and said that the current provision is not adequate to cater for the numbers requiring the service and is causing delays in hospital discharges.
Addressing the monthly council meeting in Kinlough, she said that Home Help staff are "going way beyond the call of duty" and "we're lucky to have the people we have and they are dedicated" but added that it was "not fair on them nor the people they are seeing".
She said there were many people in hospitals in acute beds "that could be at home and back into the community where they want to be".
She said: "It costs less to keep people at home than to keep them in a nursing home or hospital."
Cllr Enda Stenson supported the motion with Cllr Felim Gurn also lending his support and revealed that it is an issue "that they are starting to look at and I've brought this up at a meeting with the HSE that an hour and a half a day is not enough. I was told that the plan going forward is to keep people in their homes and they will start looking at extra hours for home help."
Cllr Des Guckian said that Home Help staff are "really overworked and I think increasing wages would make the job more attractive for others."
