Cllr Enda McGloin sought a reduced amount on a second-hand house, "particularly aimed at young people under the age of 40."
Cllr Enda McGloin noted that the Help to Buy scheme has assisted 124 individuals and families to date in Co Leitrim, with up to €30,000 of their taxes back from the previous four years, towards a deposit to either build or purchase their first home.At the monthly meeting of the local authority held in Kinlough, Cllr McGloin continued that the council supports the government's extension of the Help to Buy scheme to the end of 2025 and called for the scheme to be extended to the end of 2026 in Budget 2025, to introduce certainty for prospective buyers or those seeking to build their first home.
Cllr McGloin said that in Leitrim "there are not very many new houses being built at the moment" and asked to extend the motion to look at a reduced amount on a second-hand house, "particularly aimed at young people under the age of 40."
He said it was important to encourage developers in Leitrim and said that with developments such as Carrick Campus seeking business and employees, "do we have houses for people who may move to the county or people returning to the county to work and live here?"
The motion was supported.
