The Carrick-on-Shannon bus stop completed in April this year was part of a major development initiative known as the “Carrick-on-Shannon Destination Town Project.” The project, costing €740,000, received €500,000 in funding from Fáilte Ireland and was designed to enhance the town’s public realm, streetscape, and visitor amenities.
Source Civil Ltd managed the project.
The County Council did not specify the cost allocation for each component, but said the project included several key elements. The existing bus stop shelter along the N4’s southern carriageway was replaced with a new covered structure, featuring a sheltered seating area with views of the River Shannon, the river walk, and a newly created performance space designed for small events. Landscaping and groundworks were also completed in this area.
Additionally, a new covered bus shelter was installed on Local Road L3401-1 in front of the Primary Care Building to serve as a bus departure area. The project also involved relocating an ESB Networks sub-station that was previously situated in front of Carrick Plaza Suites.
Other improvements included upgrades to external lighting for the Costello Memorial Chapel, St. George's Church, and St Mary’s Catholic Church. The project also featured the design and installation of 16 wayfinding signs at route junctions throughout the town. Lastly, the east and west entrance points to the People’s Park were enhanced with widened footpaths, dropped kerbs, paving, and bollards.
