Community groups in Leitrim have received significant funding for Community Climate Action Programmes across the county for a host of environmental initiatives.

Leitrim County Council and the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications have announced the applications that were successful in securing funding under the first phase of the Community Climate Action Programme (CCAP).

A total of €299,964.83 has been allocated to 12 community groups across Co Leitrim to deliver local climate action projects under Strand 1 of the CCAP.

A further €618,403.67 has been allocated to 8 no. community groups across Co. Leitrim and their respective partner organisations in Northern Ireland under Strand 1a of the CCAP.

The funding is toward a host of environmental initiatives including solar panels, LED lights, bike sheds etc for community groups in Leitrim.

Full list of awarded funding is outlined below.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan said 'I am delighted to support these vital local projects under the Community Climate Action Programme, a landmark fund which is making €24 million available to climate action projects across Ireland, alongside a €3 million contribution from the government’s Shared Island Fund. Communities and Local Authorities know best the climate actions that work for their area and can deliver the most effective climate solutions on the ground. I look forward to seeing the transformative effect these projects will have not only in tackling climate change, but in making our cities, towns and villages better places to live and work.'

Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council, Cllr. Paddy O’Rourke, welcomed the allocation of funding, stating that ‘this support is very timely and will allow communities engaged in climate action to develop our exciting projects that build low carbon, sustainable communities.  The funding also recognises collaboration between communities in Co. Leitrim, with similar minded climate conscious communities in Northern Ireland.  Future phases of the Programme will continue to support the transition of communities in Co. Leitrim on their journey to becoming more sustainable.’
