A five-classroom extension to a Leitrim national school has been approved by the Department of Education, it has been confirmed.

Deputy Frank Feighan has been informed by the Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD and Minister for Special Education Hildegard Naughton TD that Scoil Mhuire NS, Bornacoola, Co Leitrim has been approved for a 5-classroom extension.

The Sligo Leitrim TD has warmly welcomed the announcement under the additional accommodation scheme.

The extension to the school comprises of 2 mainstream classrooms, and 2 special education teaching rooms for one-to-one teaching or group work alongside a new classroom to provide a special class for children with special education needs.

“This is a significant investment in the future of Scoil Mhuire NS, Bornacoola to allow the school to accommodate more pupils and children who need more ‘one to one’ teaching," Deputy Feighan said.

“This is great news for the School Principal, the Board of Management alongside the pupils and their parents and I want to congratulate the team involved in the application,” he added.

“The exact funding amount will be held back to allow a competitive tendering process that I hope can get underway as soon as tender documents are completed.

“At a political level I want to thank Ministers Foley and Naughton for this allocation of funding at this critical time for the school,” concluded Deputy Feighan.
