Dangerous bend on Leitrim road sparks concerns over road safety

Manorhamilton Municipal District has heard a call for a review of traffic calming measures on a dangerous bend in north Leitrim

Cllr Eddie Mitchell proposed a motion seeking a review of the road approaching Glenfarne Village from Manorhamilton.

“There’s a bad turn going into Glenfarne when you’re coming from Manorhamilton. We’ve had a couple of serious accidents on that bend.

“That bend is still catching people and it’s catching people at night more than during the day.

It hasn’t been identified as a high collision location, and like what I’ve been told locally is there’s accidents there all the time,” Cllr Mitchell said.

It was noted that a fatality occurred on this bend 20 years ago.

A response from the Roads department explained that Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) are the body responsible for providing funding. However, the TII has not identified this bend as a high collision area.

The response also noted that the bend lies within a 50km/h speed limit zone and has numerous advanced warning signs.

Additionally, Driver Feedback Signs are in place on the road, though they are currently malfunctioning and scheduled for servicing.

Cllr Mary Bohan suggested contacting the TII to express concerns that this bend hasn’t been flagged in their assessments.

“If you get caught on that turn, you’re into a wall. It’s a serious place to have an accident,” Cllr Mitchell added.

It was agreed to follow up with the TII to determine the threshold for designating high collision locations and to explore the possibility of installing a flashing danger sign before the bend.
