Council crews were out gritting twice per day
Leitrim has endured one of its harshest winters in years, with freezing temperatures and snow disrupting daily life. Kieran Brett, Administrative Officer with Leitrim County Council, shared the council's efforts during the challenging conditions.
“This winter, council crews were out gritting twice per day, at 4 p.m. and 4 a.m.,” Brett explained. “It’s certainly one of the coldest we’ve seen in a number of years, the coldest since 2010. It’s been a hard winter because it follows the storm a few weeks ago that caused a lot of damage in Leitrim with power outages.”
Despite the severity of the cold snap, Brett assured that preparations were in place. “We have a lot of grit in stock, and we order it in November,” he said, emphasizing the importance of readiness in facing such extreme weather.
The last of the weather warnings has now expired as the Arctic airmass begins to move away, with temperatures expected to rise in the coming days. However, the lingering icy conditions serve as a reminder of the winter’s impact on the county.
