Regional and local roads across Leitrim will benefit from funding of €14,476,650 million for maintenance and repair work.
Of this, €300,000 will go toward Hartley Bridge in Carrick-on-Shannon, while €570,000 is allocated for bridge repairs on local and regional roads. More than €450,000 will support community involvement schemes.
Almost €300,000 is designated for speed limit review signs, over €7 million will be used for restoration improvements and more than €900,000 will go towards restoration maintenance for Leitrim roads.
Nationwide, total funding amounts to €713 million, including €16.5 million allocated for 315 climate change adaptation projects to ensure the long-term sustainability and resilience of roads.
Sligo-Leitrim TD Frank Feighan welcomed the announcement, stating that funding will contribute to the ongoing renewal of regional and local roads in Leitrim.
“I am delighted to see that funding will be allocated for essential road repair works across Leitrim. This funding will be key to enhancing connectivity, supporting businesses, and making it easier and safer for families to get to and from school, and to work in our communities.
“We want to see continued safety for all road users and key to that is the protection and regeneration of our existing regional and local road network,” Deputy Feighan said.
“This funding will allow us to repair, strengthen and maintain our roads across the country, ensuring they are fit for purpose. These measures will improve the overall safety of our road network, benefiting all road users in Leitrim,” he added.
Sligo-Leitrim TD and Minister of State at the Department of Further and Higher Education, Marian Harkin, has also welcomed the funding.
“I am delighted to see the increased allocations across the three counties in my constituency, with €18,883,000 going to Sligo, €14,476,650 to Leitrim, and €42,425,000 allocated to Donegal. This represents increases of 13 percent, 10 percent, and 17 percent respectively,” Minister Harkin stated.
“As a TD representing a mainly rural constituency, I am well aware of the condition of the regional and local roads in Sligo, Leitrim and South Donegal. I have long advocated for much-needed funding to bring these roads up to standard and maintain them effectively,” she said.
“As a Government TD I am delighted to welcome the increased funding to do this and I have worked very closely with Minister Canney to achieve these increased payments."
Minister of State with responsibility for Rural Transport Jerry Buttimer said: “This funding totalling €713 million will support and enhance towns, villages, and communities the length and breadth of the State.
“It’s an investment that will boost connectivity, support businesses, and make daily commutes to school, work, and other activities easier and safer for families.”
