Major Leitrim project moves forward with construction set for summer

Phase one of the Glenfarne Woods Project, led by Coillte, has been decided, with construction set to begin in July or August this year.

The €9 million project will feature a boardwalk, a playground, a sensory trail and new parking facilities as well as designated forest bathing locations.

At February’s meeting of Manorhamilton municipal district, Cllr Eddie Mitchell requested an update on the project, which is being developed on a 530-acre Coillte forest on the shore of Lough MacNean.

A Strategic Recreation Steering Group comprising Coillte, Leitrim County Council, and recreational forum representatives, are overseeing the project.

Progress to date for the project includes a signed grant agreement, established governance structures, and a finalised procurement strategy for Phase one.

Phase one will include a new car park, a trailhead building with accessible toilets, a playground and a sensory play area.

The architectural team for detailed designs is almost finalised, pending approval from Coillte.

Tendering for the construction contract is expected in May, with construction starting in July or August expected to last between four to eight months.

Leitrim County Council is actively seeking funding options for Phase two, including potential support from the Shared Island Fund.

Plans for Phase two include a 3km greenway along the river from the gate lodge entrance to the new car park, a panoramic viewing platform and a floating boardwalk to Bilberry Island.
