Over €19,000 has been allocated for new funding for an inclusive and accessible playground at Tullaghan, as part of a nationwide initiative announced this week by Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley.

Tullaghan has been allocated €19,109 under the 2025 Capital Grant Scheme for Play and Recreation to develop a new inclusive, accessible and sensory hub playground in the village. This funding is part of a broader €500,000 national commitment to improving play spaces for children of all abilities.

The Tullaghan project, with support from Leitrim Co Council was selected for "its strong emphasis on accessibility, inclusive design, and its engagement with local children and youth."

“I’m delighted to see Tullaghan receive this funding to develop its inclusive play areas. This is a clear recognition of the value we place on accessible play for children of all abilities in our communities,” Minister Harkin said.

Launched in 2013, the Play and Recreation Capital Funding Scheme supports city and county councils in creating and enhancing playgrounds. Each authority could apply for up to €20,000 per project, with a 25% matching fund requirement. Projects were evaluated for accessibility, community involvement, and added value to local youth.

“Projects like these not only support physical development and social interaction but also foster community inclusion and joy. I commend Leitrim Co Council for its commitment to designing spaces that reflect the needs of all children,” Minister Harkin said.

She emphasised the government’s continued focus on equitable opportunities for all children regardless of background or ability.

“I want to reiterate what Minister Foley said, these grants will enable councils to create and upgrade playgrounds, making them more accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone,” the Minister concluded.
