Leitrim’s only dedicated animal shelter, the Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre, has issued an appeal for donations as it faces a slew of animals in need of its life-saving care.
“So far this year, 76 dogs have come through our gates,” the shelter announced in a heartfelt social media post. “Many arrived frightened, injured, or abused… but here, they found safety, healing, and love.”
The centre, based in Drumkeeran, has faced some harrowing cases in recent months — dogs arriving emaciated, others too weak to lift their heads. Despite limited facilities, the team has also taken in 22 cats since May, even as their cattery remains under construction.
“What would have happened to them if we hadn’t been here to help?” they ask in a Facebook post.

The centre also operates an active Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programme, aiming to reduce suffering before it starts by addressing the root causes of animal homelessness in the region. But these efforts come at a cost.
“At the halfway point of the year, our resources are being stretched,” the team admitted. “Not dangerously, but enough that we’re asking for your support to help us continue.”
The shelter emphasizes that it will never take in more animals than it can care for properly. “Every soul that comes through our doors receives the time, treatment, and love they deserve,” the team wrote.
Leitrim Animal Welfare is appealing to the public for help — whether through donations or simply by spreading the word. Contributions can be made via PayPal or GoFundMe.
“Every euro makes a difference. Every share spreads the word. Every act of kindness helps us keep saving lives.”
With unwavering dedication and a strong community behind them, the Leitrim Animal Welfare team remains hopeful that, together, no animal in the county will ever be turned away again.
