Leitrim County Council will soon undertake a review of speed limits at all schools, both rural and urban, across the county.
If implemented, these special speed limits will designate a 30km/h zone, activated during specific times of the day to align with school schedules.
The issue of road safety at schools was raised at last week’s Council meeting by Cllr Irene Guckian-Rabbitte, who requested that the Council review all traffic calming measures at schools ahead of students returning in late August and early September.
In response, the Council stated that all schools have been invited, through An Taisce, to participate in the Safe Routes to School Programme initiated by the National Transport Authority.

This programme provides for feasibility studies, assessments, planning, and the construction of traffic calming measures at school locations.
It is expected that the Safe Routes to School schemes will reopen in 2026, and schools with specific concerns should be encouraged to take part.
The Council also noted that reviews of speed limits at all schools are underway, pending the official guidance document from the Department.
All proposed school and urban speed limits will be presented to the elected members for approval.
