Storm-Damaged Coillte sites in Sligo and Leitrim set for repairs under €4M national investment

€1.4 million allocated for urgent storm repairs, with further funding to support trail development and year-round outdoor access across the northwest, Minister Marian Harkin has confirmed

Storm-Damaged Coillte sites in Sligo and Leitrim set for repairs under €4M national investment – Minister Harkin

Recreational forest sites across Sligo and Leitrim are set to receive a €4 million investment package announced by the Department of Rural and Community Development, with specific funds allocated for repairing damage caused by Storm Éowyn.

Minister Marian Harkin welcomed the funding announcement this week, describing it as a "badly needed" step toward restoring popular Coillte-managed outdoor amenities.

The investment comes in response to widespread damage inflicted by Storm Éowyn earlier this year, which led to the closure of numerous trails and recreational areas due to fallen trees, trail obstructions, and safety hazards.

In Leitrim, planned works include restoration and safety improvements at Derrycarne Forest, Glenfarne Forest, Scardan Waterfall, and along the Leitrim Way. In Sligo, Coolaney Mountain Bike Trails and Hazelwood Forest will see trail clearance and visitor safety upgrades to ensure they remain accessible and secure for the high number of annual visitors.

“Storm Éowyn did significant damage to our forest recreation sites across Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal,” said Minister Harkin. “While some of the proposed works might not be completed in time for the 2025 summer season, these are year-round amenities used by locals and visitors alike. This funding is crucial to ensure they are restored and made safe for walkers, bikers, and hikers.”

Of the €4 million package, €1.4 million has been designated as a once-off allocation to carry out urgent remedial works on sites most severely affected by the storm. An additional €2.6 million will go toward developing new trail infrastructure and maintaining existing recreational amenities around the country.
