Bothar na Naomh is a lovely Recreational, Heritage and Nature Trail that starts at Cloone Village County Leitrim. It is 3.75 km long and takes approximately 1 hour to complete.
MEP Nina Carberry has called on the European Commission to create a dedicated dementia research 'mission' under the EU Horizon programme, ahead of this weekend’s Alzheimer’s Memory Walk in Leitrim.
To mark World Alzheimer’s Day on this Sunday the 21st, local groups across the country will lead around 40 walks to raise awareness of dementia and support those living with it and their families.
The walk in Leitrim will start at 11am at Cloone Community Centre and go on a 5km route along Bothar na Naomh. Families, friends, and neighbours are invited to join in solidarity with the 64,000 people living with dementia in Ireland, and to remember those who have passed away.

Local Champion and Dementia Adviser for Roscommon and Leitrim, Teresa Keegan, will lead the walk. “It’s a special day where people across the globe come together to support those living with dementia and their families,” Teresa said.
“Here in Cloone, we’ll walk together to share memories, honour loved ones, and create new moments of joy and connection. I encourage everyone to register now at www.memorywalk.ie and join us on the day.”
EU Budget Commissioner Piotr Serafin has said he will raise MEP Carberry's proposal for a research 'mission' regarding dementia research with his fellow Commissioners. MEP Carberry has described this as a “huge step forward” in prioritising dementia research and support.
“We have made significant strides in understanding dementia, but these will only matter if Europe is ready to act.
“That means establishing a dedicated research 'mission' on dementia within Horizon Europe. A mission that can support organisations like Dementia Research Network Ireland, leading work on aftercare, respite, research, and policy reforms to improve quality of life.
“Caregivers carry double the emotional, financial, and physical stress. This support is vital for them too,” she added.
The MEP for Midlands–Northwest noted that the EU already has a cancer 'mission' with clear objectives and pillars covering prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment.
"We need the same action plan for dementia at the EU level," she concluded.
