Fundraiser underway to convert Leitrim Garda barracks into dedicated mental health centre

North West STOP has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise €100,000 in match funding to renovate the old Garda station in Drumkeeran, which they purchased in 2021, for use as their base.

North West STOP is a community-based organisation dedicated to preventing suicide through the promotion and education of positive mental health. Its counsellors are based across Leitrim, Donegal, Sligo, Roscommon, West Cavan, and North Mayo, providing vital support throughout the North West region.

In 2021, the charity purchased the old Garda station in Drumkeeran to establish a permanent base, responding to the growing demand for mental health services.

Recently, North West STOP was awarded funding to renovate the Garda station. However, to access this funding, the organisation must raise €100,000 in matching funds.

Once completed, the building will become a dedicated mental health support centre in Leitrim.

“These vital funds will not only help us meet this requirement but will also allow us to hire staff — something we currently have no funding for at all. Without this support, the building may stand, but we won’t have the people needed to bring it to life,” a spokesperson for North West STOP said.

To help reach their goal, the charity has launched a GoFundMe campaign.

The funds raised will enable them to hire their first staff members, host mental health workshops, provide specialist therapies such as play therapy and art therapy, and expand their overall reach. For the past 21 years, North West STOP has been a lifeline for countless families across the North West, saving lives and providing vital support to thousands throughout the region.

“This fundraiser is about more than a building; it’s about building a future of care, connection, and resilience for the people of Leitrim and the wider North West. Together, we can make sure that when someone needs support, there will always be a door open to welcome them.”
