Iarnród Éireann to be asked for timeline on long-sought works at Leitrim train station

It is hoped that works at Dromod train station will be completed by mid to late 2026, but there is no specific time frame for the completion of the works.

During a meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District, Cllr Sean McGowan asked that Jim Meade, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann, be contacted to request a timeframe for the installation of the new footbridge and lift at the train station.

“This has been committed by the company for the past number of years. Planning is in place, but to date there has been no timeline given as to when the works will commence,” Cllr McGowan’s motion read.

The development at Dromod train station includes a mobility-impaired access structure, designed to facilitate individuals with mobility impairments, including a pair of staircases with two flights each and freestanding lift shafts for enhanced accessibility.

Planning permission was granted in April, with the project being funded by the National Transport Authority.

A new walkway and support portals will also be constructed, and the development will result in the removal of 10 parking spaces, the relocation of three designated parking bays, and the installation of a new waiting shelter on platform two.

Cllr McGowan has long been calling for these mobility improvements to be made at Dromod train station for over a decade, saying it is “extremely difficult” for older people and parents with buggies to get across the platforms the way they are now, adding that the public are “crying out for it.”

It was agreed to write to Iarnród Éireann.
