Cllr Sean McGowan raised concerns at a meeting of Leitrim County Council over lengthy delays in property registration, urging the Government to boost staffing levels at Tailte Éireann.

Leitrim County Council hears of 18 year wait for land registration

A person in Leitrim has been waiting 18 years to get a piece of land registered in their name through Tailte Éireann, and another has been waiting six years, a meeting of Leitrim County Council heard.

Concerns have been raised regarding the length of time it takes for people to get a property registered in their name through Tailte Éireann.

Tailte Éireann provides a property registration system, property valuation service, and national mapping and surveying infrastructure for the country. They are an independent Government agency operating under the authority of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

Cllr Sean McGowan proposed a motion to call on Minister James Browne TD to increase the number of personnel working in Tailte Éireann. His motion stated he had been contacted by a number of constituents and that in a lot of cases when the paperwork is returned to the solicitor representing the applicant that there is no explanation given as to why it's returned.

“Where someone is handed over an estate or house or piece of land, and to try and get it through Tailte Éireann, it’s a slow burner,” said Cllr McGowan.

“In some cases it goes on for six years. It’s an awful headache for people trying to get property into their name,” he added.

Cllr Gary Prior seconded the motion, telling the meeting that he is aware of someone that has been trying to get a piece of land in their name for 18 years through Tailte Éireann.

The motion received unanimous support.
