A motion to establish a Library of Things in Leitrim received unanimous support at the most recent meeting of Leitrim County Council.
A Library of Things operates on the principles of shared access and collective ownership, allowing people to donate, borrow, and swap items. This reduces waste while providing an affordable alternative to ownership.
These initiatives are growing in popularity across Ireland and the UK. Cllr Brendan Barry proposed that Leitrim’s library services expand to include a Library of Things, beginning with sensory and educational toys for children, as well as puzzles, jigsaws, and musical instruments for all ages.
“I believe there are lots of good quality toys, puzzles and jigsaws in our communities that people would share, swap and donate,” his motion stated.

He noted that such a project would allow people of different ages to connect with like-minded individuals, exchange items, and ease financial pressures on families by reducing the need to purchase everything new.
Cllr Paddy O’Rourke seconded the motion, observing that children often take up new hobbies and quickly lose interest. This initiative, he said, would allow families to borrow items and try them out without the expense of buying equipment upfront.
An official response confirmed that the Leitrim Library Service already offers a lending collection of toys and sensory equipment, which continues to expand. The Sense-Ability collection includes more than 170 toys and pieces of equipment designed to support children and adults who are neuro-diverse.
While toy donations or swaps are not currently part of the lending catalogue due to health and safety considerations, the service welcomes ideas for community-led share-and-swap events.

The library could serve as a meeting space for themed gatherings, and staff remain open to any initiatives that promote sharing and learning.
