Nearly one in every two offers of accommodation made to approved Council tenants on housing waiting lists, are refused ,according to figures released at the July Council meeting.
Responding to a query by Cllr Felim Gurn regarding vacancies on Council estates around the county, the Administrative Officer, Corporate Services explained that the Local Authority had a housing stock of 937 units inclusive of Demountable Dwellings and Traveller Group Housing Schemes.
It was noted that there was a significant turnover of housing stock on an ongoing basis and the Council spokesperson admitted that refusal rates for housing allocations was running at 47% in Co Leitrim for the year to date.
The spokesperson went on to stress that this remained a serious issue and the Local Authority are trying to ensure all vacant properties were assigned as soon as possible.
It was noted that the high refusal rate, combined with high housing turnover, “contributed significantly to the vacancy level within the (Council’s) Housing Stock.”
