Sligo-Leitrim Minister Marian Harkin has encouraged adults who feel uncertain about using smartphones, tablets or laptops to take part in courses designed to build digital, literacy, financial and numeracy skills, which are available nationwide.
The call comes as many people will have received smart devices over the Christmas period.
The initiative is part of the Adult Literacy for Life (ALL) strategy, which supports people who may have left school early or who wish to refresh their skills by offering opportunities to return to learning in a supportive and practical environment.
The courses help adults to strengthen reading, writing, numeracy and digital skills, while also providing pathways into further education, training and employment, and boosting confidence in everyday life.
ALL is a 10-year, cross-government strategy, supported by a national programme office within SOLAS, which oversees its implementation.

Launched in 2021, the strategy sets out a cross-government, cross-economy and cross-society approach to achieving the vision of an Ireland where every adult has the necessary literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills to fully engage in society and realise their potential.
Highlighting the growing importance of digital skills in work, community and family life, Minister Harkin said, “Across Ireland, adults are discovering how much they can achieve when they have the right support.
“If you have a new phone or tablet but aren’t sure how to get the best from it, you are not alone. Local Education and Training Boards are here to help you learn at your own pace and unlock its potential. There is no stigma, only opportunity.”
Adults interested in improving their digital literacy, reading, writing or numeracy skills are encouraged to contact their local Education and Training Board.
