Leitrim to benefit from over €3 million investment in walking and cycling infrastructure

More than €3 million in Government funding has been announced for Leitrim under the Active Travel and Greenways programme for 2026. This investment will support the development of walking and cycling projects that provide safe, sustainable and healthy transport options for communities across the country.

Under the combined Active Travel and Greenways allocations for 2026, Leitrim County Council will receive €3,486,530.

A number of Active Travel projects in Leitrim will benefit from the funding in 2026, including €20,000 for the Park Road upgrade in Manorhamilton, €220,000 for the Carrick-on-Shannon–Attifinlay Roundabout to Summerhill Active Travel Scheme, and €18,435 for a junction upgrade in Ballinamore. Several schools are also included under different rounds of the Safe Routes to School Programme, with €20,000 allocated to St Patrick’s NS, Drumshanbo under Round Four, €80,000 for Mohill Community School under Round Two, and €20,000 for Ballinamore Scoil Chlann Naofa under Round Three.

At national level, €290 million has been allocated to the National Transport Authority’s (NTA) Active and Sustainable Transport Investment Programme to support the development of walking and cycling infrastructure in villages, towns and cities. A further €62 million has been allocated for the delivery of Greenway projects across Ireland.

It is expected that 200 kilometres of walking and cycling infrastructure will be delivered in 2026, in line with targets set out in the Climate Action Plan.

The funding announcement was made on January 19 by Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, Minister of State with responsibility for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports Seán Canney, and Minister of State with responsibility for Rural Transport Jerry Buttimer.

“The €290 million invested in the NTA’s Active and Sustainable Transport Investment Programme will assist with the development of key active travel networks in our villages, towns and cities, making walking and cycling a viable option for more of our population,” said Minister O’Brien.

“The investment of €62 million in our Greenways network, meanwhile, will help deliver key projects all over the country and is another step towards the development of a National Cycle Network,” he added.
