Overgrown trees prompt safety concerns on national road in Leitrim

Locals have reported visibility problems on a national road in Leitrim, raising concerns about road safety.

At January’s meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, Cllr Eddie Mitchell tabled a motion regarding the issue on the N16.

The concerns relate to trees growing out of a retaining wall, which are causing significant visibility problems.

Cllr Mitchell asked that the Council engage with Transport Infrastructure Ireland and carry out an assessment of the situation.

“Willows grow very quickly up above the retaining wall blocking sight lines, affecting N16 road users as they drive along the N16 where it runs adjacent to the Gornavannoge River at East Barrs, Glenfarne,” Cllr Mitchell’s motion stated.

He noted that local residents have attempted to address the problem themselves, but the issue continues.

“Locals aware of the sightline issue have attempted to keep the willows cut back, but as the roots are deeply embedded in a high stone retaining wall, adjacent to fast-flowing water, a more permanent solution is needed,” he said.

In response, the Roads Department confirmed that the District Engineer will assess the location and advise on possible remedial measures.
