Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre have shared a heartbreaking story of an older dog that has recently come into their care.
On January 20, 13-year-old Ivy arrived at the centre after her beloved owner sadly passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Christmas Eve.
In a post shared on Facebook, the centre described the incredibly close bond the terrier shared with her owner. “They were inseparable. Ivy spent her life by their side, and they shared an incredibly strong bond. Losing them has left Ivy confused, heartbroken, and completely lost.”
Since arriving at the centre, the post continued, Ivy has spent much of her time lying in bed. “She just wants to hide away, curling up quietly and shutting herself off from the world. The noise and unfamiliar environment are overwhelming for her nervous little soul. She is very shut down, and it’s been hard for us to gauge her true personality yet,” the post said.

Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre are now pleading for a loving home for Ivy, where she can spend her remaining years in comfort.
Describing her condition, they said, “Ivy is also carrying a little extra weight and will need a gentle diet and regular exercise, but right now her biggest need is emotional, she just wants comfort, stability, and someone to belong to again.”
The centre explained that because Ivy is easily stressed, the best environment for her would be an adult-only home where she can move around at her own pace, feel safe, and truly relax.
“This was an extremely sad surrender. Ivy didn’t lose her home because she wasn’t loved, she lost it because life changed in the most heartbreaking way.
“All we want now is to find Ivy the perfect place to spend her golden years – warm, quiet, and full of love. She deserves nothing less,” the post concluded.
Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre are pleading for serious enquiries only, which can be made by emailing adoption@leitrimanimalwelfare.ie
