Overpaid and underworked politicians not entitled to extravagant travel expenses

Overpaid and underworked politicians not entitled to extravagant travel expenses

Bernard Sweeney, Independent socialist candidate for Sligo, Leitrim, South Donegal and West Cavan constituency calls on political candidates to give an election commitment that politicians who travel less than 30 kilometres to work, or where there is frequent and available public transport should not be entitled to travel expenses.

In addition, a tapered rate for decreasing travel distance should be enforced. All monies saved to be directly transferred to life-saving NGOs and charities such as the Rape Crisis Centre and suicide awareness groups.

Mr Sweeney said “Political members are overpaid and should share the burden of austerity. It’s quite evident that the good people of our constituency, are not getting value for money.”

Once elected, Mr Sweeney commits that he will only accept a standardised living wage or hire another person, offering opportunity for employment. This money will be taken out of the TD's overpaid salary.
