Over €1.7 million has been announced to improve homes for older people and people with disabilities across Leitrim. This funding comes under the Housing Adaptation Grants for Older People and Disabled People.

Leitrim will receive €1,514,411 in Exchequer funding. When combined with contributions from the local authority, the projected total rises to €1,781,660.

The Housing Adaptation Grants Scheme provides grants of up to €40,000 to help people with disabilities adapt their homes, up to €10,700 for essential repairs or improvements for older people, and up to €8,000 for mobility aids.

Significant funding has also been announced for the North West, with Donegal receiving €4,932,554 in Government funding (projected total €5,803,005), and Sligo receiving €2,318,945 in Government funding (projected total €2,728,170).

This means over €10.3 million in projected funding for the North West. Nationally, when combined with contributions from local authorities, the scheme will deliver over €152 million in total funding in 2026, supporting approximately 17,000 grant claims.

Minister of State, Marian Harkin, welcomed the announcement, saying the funding will make a real difference to families across the North West by allowing older people and those with disabilities to continue living safely and independently in their homes.

“Across Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal, these grants make a huge difference to people’s daily lives. They support older people and those with disabilities to remain living independently in their own homes and communities, which is something many people strongly value,” said Minister Harkin.

“Whether it is installing stairlifts, improving accessibility, adapting bathrooms or carrying out essential repairs, these grants provide practical support that allow people to stay in familiar surroundings with dignity and independence,” she added.

She concluded by encouraging anyone who may benefit from the scheme to contact their local authority for information on how to apply.

“This funding ensures many more families across Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal can access the support they need to make their homes safer, more accessible and more suitable for their needs,” concluded Minister Harkin.
