‘Frustrating’ Facebook restrictions threaten animal adoptions for Leitrim Welfare Group

Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre speaks out as new Facebook restrictions pose an obstacle to finding homes for animals on the site

‘Frustrating’ Facebook restrictions threaten animal adoptions for Leitrim Welfare Group

Leitrim Animal Welfare has announced its frustration at Facebook after the platform restricted its ability to publish posts about animals that are available to be adopted on the site.

Facebook restricts people's ability to buy, sell, promote ot exchange live animals on the platform. The Animal Welfare organisation submitted an appeal to Meta, which owns Facebook, but it was denied.

A decision appears to be against Meta’s own Guidelines on the sale of “Non-Endangered Animals and Endangered Species“ as laid out on their website. Last updated in February, the guidelines do not prohibit posts of this kind; in fact, they expressly allow posts that “Promote or offer live non-endangered animals solely within the context of donations, rehoming, or adoptions.”
The decision poses a significant challenge to the group that uses its Facebook page to find homes for the animals in their care.

The group described it as an “important and frustrating change” in a post on Facebook.

“Because of this, we will no longer be posting animal adoption profiles directly on Facebook that are available for adoption. If we go against these community guidelines, we risk our page being restricted or permanently banned.”

“This may slow down adoptions for us, as Facebook has been an amazing platform for finding homes and reaching further afield. It may also mean things are a little quieter on our social media than usual”

The group said that they would continue to post about the animals in their care online, and the public could follow them there or on their website.

“Our mission remains the same, and we are as committed as ever to finding safe, loving homes for every animal in our care.”
