Significant progress has been made in the development of a greyway between Jamestown and Drumsna, a meeting of the Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District has heard.
At April’s meeting of Carrick MD, Cllr Irene Guckian-Rabbitte asked that Leitrim County Council provide an update on any future plans to develop a Greenway/Blueway between the historic villages of Drumsna and Jamestown in collaboration with Roscommon County Council.
“This pathway would provide a safe and scenic off-road experience for pedestrians and cyclists with a possible link to Carrick-on-Shannon in the future,” her motion stated.
“I know this has been mentioned before and I was wondering if there’s any updates regarding this,” said Cllr Guckian-Rabbitte.
Cllr Maeve Reynolds seconded her motion and noted that Jamestown Community Council and Drumsna Development met with Roscommon County Council in an effort to progress this, and that Leitrim has allocated money in the budget if
grant funding is secured for a greyway between the two villages for match funding with Roscommon County Council.

“We should keep that well on the agenda. This needs to be kept high up the Leitrim agenda and support Roscommon County Council any way we can,” commented Cllr Reynolds.
It was confirmed that the plan is for a greyway between the two villages, as opposed to a greenway or blueway, which would incorporate a footpath on the right-hand side from Jamestown to Drumsna. There would also be no provision of lighting.
“I would hope we can get the I’s dotted and the T’s crossed and we can see a bit of progress soon,” commented Cllr McGowan.
Cllr Flynn noted that if the greyway for some reason didn’t progress, a blueway would be a preferred option, offering a more scenic route.
Cllr Reynolds added that a lot of progress has already been made, and a greyway is much more cost effective.

A response from the Roads Department confirmed: “Roscommon County Council has received Project Development Funding of €50,000 for preparatory works for the development of a greyway between Drumsna Bridge and Jamestown Bridge. They are currently progressing an options appraisal report for this scheme.”
