While Co Leitrim has been experiencing extremely mild weather for this time of year, all that will end with a cold snap set to sweep across the country later this week.
Today, daytime temperatures will drop from the 12ºC to 13ºC we have been experiencing to a high of just 8ºC. Overnight temperatures will fall to 4ºC.
Thursday will see a further drop in temperature with a high of just 5ºC expected during the day and night time temperatures falling to near freezing. However showers are expected in the afternoon and will turn to sleet or snow, especially on higher ground. Motorists are advised to drive with caution on Friday morning as there will be frost and icy patches.
There will be some showers, some turning to sleet and snow, on Friday and temperatures aren't expected to top 5ºC. Overnight temperatures will drop to 1ºC and ground frost is expected.
Chilly conditions will continue into the weekend. On Saturday conditions will be cloudy with a high of 5ºC. Overnight temperatures will drop to 0ºC. Sunday will remain cloudy but dry with a high of 6ºC. Overnight temperatures will once again drop to 1ºC.
Meteorologists are advising that these lower temperatures will be the norm for the rest of the month with daytime temperatures not expected to reach double figures and overnight lows of between 2ºC and 5ºC .
