Leitrim Senators claimed over €70k in expenses

In a week where it seems every political party is looking to abolish the Seanad, it was revealed that Leitrim Senators John Ellis and Paschal Mooney claimed over €70,000 in expenses last year.

In a week where it seems every political party is looking to abolish the Seanad, it was revealed that Leitrim Senators John Ellis and Paschal Mooney claimed over €70,000 in expenses last year.

From November 1, 2009 until November 1, 2010, a 12 month period where the Senate sat for just 98 days, Senators claimed over €2.1m in expenses on top of their salaries.

In figures obtained by the Sunday Independent under the Freedom of Information Act Leitrim's Fianna Fail Senator John Ellis claimed €44,374 while fellow party and county Senator Paschal Mooney claimed €27,220 in expenses last year. Senator Mooney re-joined the Seanad in January of 2010 after successfully contesting a by-election. Locally Cavan's Joe O'Reilly FG made it into the top ten list of highest claims with €47,356, Roscommon's Terry Leyden FF took home €45,398; Sligo's Marc McSharry FF claimed €44,314, Gerladine Feeney got €44,321 and Cavan's Diarmuid Wilson received €43,305.
