High winds leave thousands without power

THOUSANDS of homes across Counties Leitrim, Roscommon and Longford were left without power for a number of hours on Monday after high winds brought trees and branches down on power lines across the North West and Midlands.

Winds gusting up to 144km or 90 miles an hour over Sunday night caused massive problems for the ESB. At the peak of the windy conditions 25,000 homes across the North West and Midlands were affected.

In Co Leitrim nearly 2000 people in the Ballinamore area were left without power and a further 200 homes in Dromod were also affected by supply issues.

Seven hundred homes were affected in Longford town while a further 1,000 homes in the Lanesboro area were also left without power. Homes in Counties Sligo and Donegal were also impacted in the aftermath of the strong wind.
