26% of births outside marriage

Just over one quarter of births registered in Co Leitrim in 2011 were outside marriage according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.

Just over one quarter of births registered in Co Leitrim in 2011 were outside marriage according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The figures, released last week, showed that 467 births were registered to mothers livinh in Co Leitrim last year. Of these 123 were outside of marriage, although the majority of these (83) were to parents registered as living at the same address.

The number of children born to married parents was substantially higher in Co Leitrim than the national average which revealed that only 66 percent of births were to married partners.

Nationally, one third of all births were outside marriage.
