Co Leitrim has the most rural population in the State with only 10.4 percent of the population living in urban areas according to the latest round of Census statistics released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
The findings also showed that Carrick-on-Shannon is the largest town in the county with 3980 persons recorded as living within a four kilometre square area. This means there was a 25.8 percent increase for the population in the County Town over the previous five years. Next highest is Manorhamilton with a population of 1,336, up 15.4 percent on 2006 Census figures.
The findings also revealed that while 1,400 Leitrim residents moved in year to April 2011, the vast majority of these (866) actually only moved to other locations in Co Leitrim.
The study also showed that the majority of those moving lived in rented accommodation with only 89 of the 632 Leitrim households who moved between April 2010 and April 2011, stating that they had bought their new home with a mortgage or loan.
