The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar TD, has confirmed an allocation of €6,424,300 for Co Leitrim’s Regional and Local Roads.
Fine Gael TD for Sligo/North Leitrim, Tony McLoughlin, welcomed the announcement noting “motorists and road users in Leitrim will welcome the fact that their roads and bridges will be safer and in better condition. This funding will add significantly to road safety in Leitrim and further improve the local and regional roads across the county.
“Whilst individual local authorities are responsible under law for the upkeep and maintenance of regional and local roads, it is important to emphasise that these grants supplement local authorities’ own spending on regional and local road projects and do not represent the total investment in regional and local roads for this year,” he added.
Deputy Frank Feighan also welcomed the news, noting that “the Council will have more discretion about how they allocate funding under the various grant categories.
“Against a backdrop of ongoing limited resources, the priority this year is to maintain the existing road network,” he said.
