Sinn Fein Councillor Martin Kenny put forward that Leitrim County Council should call on the Government to establish a new Minister of State for the Diaspora. This was supported by Cllr Enda Stenson and Sean McGowan.

Cllr Kenny said, “Given that almost 400,000 Irish citizens have been forced to emigrate since the economic downturn and given that further tens of thousands of our people have been forced abroad in previous decades, the Government should take a more constructive approach to dealing with the needs of the Irish citizens living abroad.”
