Sligo/North Leitrim TD John Perry has said that the position of his Parliamentary Assistant which his wife Maria held for six months was “on a purely voluntary basis”.
The Fine Gael representative came under fire recently after it was revealed that Mrs Perry had been holding the position between July and December of last year.
The role earns up to €38,000 per annum but the Ballymote based TD rebuffed reports his wife was paid while in the job.
In a statement, Mr Perry said: “There was no cost or charge to the State for the work she carried out during that period.
“Having been an integral part of my political career for the past 18 years, Maria was eminently qualified to fulfil the position of Parliamentary Assistant.”
Deputy Perry confirmed that Thomas Walsh will take up the position on a full-time basis in mid-April.
