There are 46 children living in direct provision accommodation in the Sligo, Leitrim, West Cavan area.
Direct provision accommodation is government accommodation for asylum seekers, they are given full board with a weekly allowance of €19.10 per adult and €9.60 per child.
Recent findings of HIQA Inspection of the child protection and welfare services provided to children living in direct provision raised serious concerns about the high number of children living in these centres who have been referred to The Child and Family Agency.
Of the 46 children living in direct provision accommodation locally, there were 15 referrals. The authority reviewed 13 children living in 9 families. The referrals varied but common themes were physical or mental illness, lack of clothes and toys, parents isolating themselves and their children from networks and support services.
The report found cases in Sligo, Leitrim and West Cavan were dealt with promptly with excellent inter-agency co-operation.
