The county has the lowest figure in Ireland for destroying dogs, despite the fact that nationally one in five dogs which ended up in pounds, didn’t survive the year.

There were 384 dogs in the Leitrim pound last year, 102 were seized, while the rest were surrendered or collected. 226 dogs were transferred to dog welfare groups, 95 were rehomed and 13 were reclaimed. Four dogs died by natural causes last year. There were 45 dogs still in the pound by the end of last year. Leitrim Dog Control is operated by Leitrim Animal Welfare. The service was €10,053.72 in deficit by the end of 2014.

There are 2,365 individual dog licences in operation in the county.
