Leitrim's businesses have been hit with losses of at least €7m as a result of the severe weather conditions over the last three weeks.
Restaurants and hotels have lost substantial business due to cancellations while local publicans are reporting a massive drop in customers. Road hauliers, agricultural businesses and construction firms are also facing serious losses as a reault of the weather and with icy conditions set to prevail until at least Christmas Day, the final cost of the ice and snow is expected to reach double figures by the end of the month.
Local businessman and councillor John McCartin, told the Leitrim Observer that "businesses have been devastated by this because they have been literally been brought to a standstill by the weather."
He said initial calculations suggested the losses experienced by the businesses in the county could be as much as €7m and with the cold weather expected to continue well into the weekend, this figure is only set to increase.
