Fine Gael Deputy for Sligo/North Leitrim Tony McLoughlin has urged septic tank owners to register their septic tank before 28th September in order to avail of the reduced registration fee €5.
Thereafter the fee will be €50. Homeowners who have a septic tank or waste-water treatment system need to register their system by 1st February 2013. Deputy McLoughlin said there had been a “lot of scare mongering” on the issue, but said that the Minister had obtained the “best outcome possible for septic tank owners”.
“I have lobbied for a grant scheme to be put in place by the Minister which he has undertaken to consider after the initial inspection process next year, so it is important to note that there will be no inspections until the registration system has been complete,” he said.
“This will be a risk based system of inspection and will be objective and evidence-based, i.e. unless there is evidence of endangerment of human health or the environment, the system in place should pass inspection which is worthy of note” stated the Sligo/Leitrim Deputy.
