Independent Presidential hopeful, Seán Gallagher was formally nominated by the members of Leitrim County Council at the September meeting last Monday.

Cllr Enda Stenson, who put forward a proposal seeking the nomination initially at the July meeting of the Council, formally nominated Mr Gallagher last night. The proposal was seconded by fellow Independent Councillor, Gerry Dolan.

This is the second nomination for Mr Gallagher. Earlier on Monday members of Meath County Council also ratified his right to contest the Presidential election.

In a statement issued following his nomination, Mr Gallagher said he was “pleased to see Councillors exercising their democratic powers in supporting Independent candidates.

“I wanted from the start to seek a nomination from the Councils as I believe that Councillors are the closest to the people,” he said.

“I would like to thank Councillors on Leitrim and Meath County Councils for their support and courtesy.”
