The short term future of garda stations at Cloone and Ballinamore appears to be secure following correspondence from Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter to Leitrim County Council.
At the recent monthly Council meeting it was revealed that the Minister had responded to an earlier motion put forward by Cllr Caillian Ellis on the future of both stations in writing, confirming that neither station had been included in the closure list for 2012.
Cllr Ellis said that while he welcomed the news that the stations had not been earmarked for closure in 2012, there was another round of closures planned for 2013 and there is no way of knowing if these stations would face closure then.
“I would hope that Ballinamore in particular would remain open, especially in light of the rising crime in the area in recent months,” he said. “While the community alert schemes are a good initiative, we need to have a garda presence in the area as well and Ballinamore is essential for that.”
