Co Leitrim may no longer have the highest proportion of its population over the age of 65, but it does have the highest number of pensioners living alone.

The Central Statics Office (CSO) figures released last week showed that Co Leitrim has the third highest proportion of the population over the age of 65 in 2011.

The statistics revealed that 14.8 percent of the county is pension age or older. However Cork City (15.1 percent) and Co Mayo (15 percent) both showed higher proportional populations of elderly.

Despite this Co Leitrim has returned the highest proportion of people aged 65 years and older, living alone at 31.3 percent.
