The HSE in Leitrim is providing enhanced Day Services at Our Lady’s Hospital in Manorhamilton to further support older people in the North Leitrim and West Cavan area.
From mid June, a new Consultant Geriatrician, Dr. Grainne O’Malley will be attending the Day Hospital for one day per week to oversee a Multidisciplinary Team Clinic, during which the older people will receive a comprehensive range of assessments and treatments.
The Day Hospital has also secured €100,000 through GENIO for older people with advanced dementia and their families. This funding will go to providing increased night respite and telecare. There will also be increased nursing and medical staff at the Day Hospital on an outreach basis for those with advanced dementia, ensuring earlier discharge from Sligo Regional Hospital and expanded community supports.
Frank Morrison, Service Manager for Older People, said, “We will be commencing a Falls Assessment Clinic and a Memory-Led clinic at the Day Hospital for older people in North Leitrim and West Cavan who are concerned about their memory.
“We will also be setting up a Diabetic Clinic with Dr. Wilma Lourens, Consultant Endocrinologist for older people in the surrounding area.”
Another 80 telecare packages will be administered at this year for older people and their families who require increased support at home.
The packages include a pendant alarm, flood and smoke detectors, property exit sensors, temperature extreme sensors, bed occupancy sensors, a fall detector, gas detector and a panic button.
These packages are lifetime packages, with funding through Co-operation and Working Together (CAWT) and the European Union.
A new social day care service will also commence at the Bee Park Centre in Manorhamilton at which older people will have their social and nursing needs met.
The social day care service will provide a number of additional supports including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, chiropody, laundry, hair dressing, and a midday meal for older people in the area.
