2014 marks the seventh year for the South Leitrim 80km Cycle in aid of the North West Hospice.
To date, Tracy Kivlehan and her dedicated team of volunteers, have succeeded in raising over €120,000 for the North West Hospice.
But not only have their efforts helped the Hospice, the Leitrim Association of People with Disability; Arus Carolan NH, Mohill Community Network and Pieta House have all received €3,000 and the Simon Community, Billy’s World and Special Olympics have received €1,000 each.
This is a wonderful event with a focus on enjoyment and fun. Organisers are looking for amateurs of all ages who may not have been on a bike in years. You really do not need to be a sports enthusiast to be able for this challenge.
So many of the participants have sadly lost a loved one and the palliative care team have helped them through their difficult times – this is a wonderful way to say thank you and to remember those we miss dearly.
Cyclists will be accompanied on the day by the infamous Looney Hoppers whose constant ‘encouragement’ (to use the term loosely) will be sure to keep you motivated.
The event is great fun and it is a wonderful sense of achievement to cross the finish line in Mohill.
The South Leitrim 80km cycle will be held on Saturday, August 2, with cyclists asked to gather at St Patrick’s Church, Mohill by 10am.
The route will move from Mohill to Ballinamore, into Drumshanbo and Leitrim Village before passing through Carrick-on-Shannon and Dromod and heading back to Mohill.
There will be a couple of short breaks along the way and lunch will be provided.
There will also be a barbeque provided for everyone at the completion of the cycle.
Participants will be given a target of €200 to raise, but organiser, Tracy Kivlehan stresses that anything you can raise would be very welcome. For every €200 raised your name will go into a draw for a chance to win €3000 for a registered charity of your choice.
Remember, North West Hospice depends on important fund raising events like this to support the provision of on-going services year-on-year - and they are extremely grateful for every single euro they receive.
“We understand how difficult it can be to raise €200 so it is important to keep in mind that your efforts are making a massive difference in the lives of someone else’s mother, father, brother or sister,” says Tracy.
“If you are asked for sponsorship by one of our cyclists please give what you can....every single euro towards the hospice helps to maintain the vital service they provide our community with.”
