Assisted employment in County Leitrim has dropped by 43.5 percent between 2004 and 2013 a recent report has found.

The figures, released this week by the WDC (Western Development Commission) illustrate that 1,311 people worked in companies which were assisted by IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland or Údarás na Gaeltachta. This number is down significantly from 2004’s figure of almost 3,000.

This is the second lowest share in the region and sixth lowest nationally. International Services was Leitrim’s largest assisted sector for most of the nine year period. It declined from 2009 to reach its lowest point in 2012 when it dropped below Traditional Manufacturing.

In 2013, 63 percent of assisted employment in the county was in foreign owned companies which is the highest share in the Western Region.
