‘The Rising’ a film based around the Easter Rising and Sean MacDiaramada’s influence is expected to be the first movie to be produced for the centenary of the 1916 rising.
Kevin McCann from Belturbet was given an initial grant of €1,000 from Leitrim County Council to research the script. Northern Ireland Screen, the film board in Belfast are now co-financing the screenplay and McCann reports that “I have raised almost 2/3 of the developed finance in the past 3 months and I seek to complete this finance by Easter Sunday.”
McCann has been touring New York, Boston and Chicago drumming up support and finance for the ambitious project.
Donations and investments from $100 to $10,000 have been committed to this film project.
He told the Leitrim Observer, “The Rising will be the first movie produced about the Easter Rising and the Proclamation.
“As well as highlighting the significance of Seán MacDiarmada to Irish history, this movie project will provide local jobs for Leitrim and Cavan during the development and production.”
‘Volkswagen Joe,’ a film he produced in Cavan and Leitrim last year won an award at the Boston Irish Film Festival and was runner up in Chicago Film Festival.
