A new Lions Club for Co Leitrim has been formally created at a meeting in Carrick-on-Shannon last Thursday night.
Co Leitrim was the only county in Ireland not to have a Lions Club but that anomaly has now been corrected.
The meeting last Thursday was overseen by Lions Club members from Westport Lions Club and Sligo Lions Club and the selection of officers was formally ratified.
Leitrim Lions Club will be inclusive of all areas of Co Leitrim. The current members hail from the wider Dromahair, Carrick-on-Shannon, Leitrim and Mohill areas.
The Lions Club here is now anxious to spread the word and attract members from all over the county who wish to get involved in a wonderful community-based and members-led organisation which will work tirelessly to raise money for various charities.
The officers elected are: President: Con Kelly, Dromahair. Secretary, Rosaleen Rowlette, Dromahair. Treasurer: Ciaran Reidy, Mohill.
Members of the club come from a wide geographical area and from all walks of life. The Lions Club is all inclusive and welcomes everyone who wishes to get involved and do some good work for worthy causes in our community.
Much of the focus of Lions Clubs is to raise money for worthy causes. All funds raised by Lions Clubs from the general public are used for charitable purposes.
Administrative costs are kept strictly separate and paid for by members.
The Lions Club motto is “We Serve”. The view is that whenever a Lions Club gets together, problems get smaller. And communities get better. That’s because Lions Clubs help where help is needed – in our own communities and around the world.
The Lions Club has 46,000 clubs and 1.35 million members, making it the world’s largest service club organisation.
It is also one of the most effective with members doing whatever is needed to help their local communities.
If you’re interested in volunteering, leading projects, networking and having fun – you can do all of this and more as a Lions Club member.
Lions Clubs around the country get involved in many different fundraising events throughout the year including the Christmas food appeal where Lions members will collect non-perishable food for those in need in co-ordination with local supermarkets.
They then forward the food to charities like St. Vincent de Paul which will distribute it among needy people in the locality.
There are many other local fundraising projects in the pipeline in the months ahead.
The next meeting of the Leitrim Lions Club will take place in The Bush Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon on Wednesday, April 10th at 8pm.
So lets see you from Carrick-on-Shannon, Mohill, Drumshanbo, Ballinamore, Drumkeerin, Manorhamilton and everywhere in between.
Everyone is very welcome to come along and join a great community organisation.
