October is Children’s Book Festival month, a nationwide celebration of children’s literature and reading. The festival is spearheaded by Children’s Books Ireland, and this year’s theme is “Stories are for Everyone”! With this in mind, Leitrim County Library’s Service has coordinated a jam-packed programme of events, which is currently underway in branch libraries across the county.
Children, from pre-school right up to 6th class, will be given the amazing opportunity to meet authors, storytellers, and illustrators and to participate in book-themed workshops. There’s even a sprinkle of magic thrown in for good measure!
Highlights include a visit by Scottish storyteller and author Fred Freeman, a very exciting print workshop facilitated by the National Print Museum and a local history talk with well-known Leitrim historian Eamon Daly. Children’s authors Gerry Boland and Juliette Saumande are sure to captivate their audiences while a Puppet and Magic show with Frances McGonigle will keep everyone on the edge of their seats! We are also very pleased to include a workshop with cartoonist and illustrator Cliodhna Lyons, which is kindly sponsored by Children’s Books Ireland, and story-making workshops with Chris Thompson, Sadie Cramer and Mary Blake.
All events are free, and are pre-arranged with local pre-schools and primary schools.
In addition, Leitrim County Library’s Service is hosting a very special Family Event in Ballinamore Library on Saturday 25th October at 12 noon, when children’s author and storyteller Liam Farrell will perform his much-loved Big Good Wolf Show, based on his hugely successful “Big Bad Wolf” trilogy. With references to the Three little Pigs, and Little Red Riding Hood’s Granny, along with the afore-mentioned Big Good Wolf, this event promises an entertaining start to your mid-term fun!
And remember “Stories are for Everyone”, so drop in to your local library during Children’s Book Festival month, this is an ideal opportunity to join, and explore the delightful reads on offer, from the CBI Recommended Reading Guide, and beyond.
